Hair Laying / Ventilating / Wigs
Nothing looks worse on camera than a badly-done false moustache. Facial hair is one of the most challenging and detail-oriented tasks that a makeup artist is expected to perform on set. Hair laying and wigs have to be perfect every time, every take, every day. If you can master hair laying, then you have a job for life. Students learn how to hand-lay a beard using wool crepe, yak and also human hair, as well as how to "float" a pre-made, hand-laid beard, applying it as a whole piece to a performer. To make a ventilated hairpiece on lace, students will hand-tie strands of hair onto specially imported netting, in order to make a moustache, beard, sideburns, or eyebrows.
